Learn Calligraphy

App Design

Learn Calligraphy is an app geared toward calligraphers of all experience levels with recommendation and sorting features to customize content to the user. Historic and modern calligraphy trends both have a place in this app, and a color palette with the beige of old parchment paired with a more modern orange helps bring traditional writing methods to a modern audience.

User Personas

Dick, 35

Team lead at a small game development studio. Enjoys running and coffee. Always on the go; always learning something new. His latest interest is calligraphy — especially historic writing styles.

Nicole, 26

An editor who is planning her wedding and loves DIY projects, organizing, Pinterest, and handmade gifts. She hopes to learn calligraphy to make her wedding beautiful and keep it within budget.

Sophie, 17

A teen who is trying to keep busy during winter break while her best friend is away. Hand lettering is cool, so she might as well try it to keep her busy in the evenings when she’s not baking with her grandma.

User Testing

The app was refined through two rounds of user testing, first with low-res wireframes and again with medium-res wireframes, before the final version was created. Both rounds of user testing used the POP (prototyping on paper) mobile app and hotmapping to present scans of the paper screens in a real phone. User navigation patterns and points of confusion were analyzed to improve the user experience.
